Single status certificate attestation in the UAE is often the step that decides whether a marriage appointment goes ahead. When expatriates marry here, the court or registrar needs proof that neither partner is already married, in the form of a single status certificate, a certificate of no impediment or a sworn declaration. Issued abroad, it must be attested and translated into Arabic. Wordcraft plans the route around your wedding date.

Who Issues a Single Status Certificate

It depends on your nationality. Some countries issue it from a civil registry or local authority, some through a notary as a sworn affidavit, and some through their embassy or consulate in the UAE. The name changes too: bachelor certificate, certificate of no impediment, nulla osta, celibacy certificate. If you were married before, the registrar will want proof that the marriage ended, which is covered under divorce certificate attestation.

When the Marriage Registrar Asks for It

  • Marrying in the UAE at a court, a civil marriage registry or, for some communities, a religious authority recognized in the UAE.
  • Registering in the UAE a marriage performed abroad, where the authority wants the pre-marriage status.
  • Fiancé(e) and partner files at some embassies and immigration offices.
  • Marrying in another country with a UAE-issued status document, which then follows the outbound MOFA route.

Each court or registrar keeps its own document list, so we go through it with you before anything is ordered.

Single Status Certificate Attestation Routes

Issued in your home country

The certificate or affidavit is issued or notarized, then certified by the home-country authority that handles personal documents (a state or home department, for example) where required. The foreign ministry authenticates it, and the UAE Embassy or Consulate legalizes it with the UAE MOFA attestation built into the same digital step. It is then ready for Arabic translation.

Issued by your embassy in the UAE

If your embassy or consulate here issues the certificate, it goes to the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs for digital MOFA attestation, and is then translated into Arabic for the court.

Timing It Around Your Wedding Date

  • Both partners usually prove their own status, so we run the two routes side by side.
  • Freshness matters: many registrars want a recently issued certificate. If the wedding is months away, check the validity window before ordering.
  • Previously married? Add the attested divorce decree or the former spouse's death certificate to the plan from day one.
  • Names must match the passports letter for letter, on both the certificate and the translation.

Tell us your appointment date when you send the photo. We work backwards from it and give you the timing in writing with the quote, within 10–30 minutes.

Arabic Translation for the Marriage File

UAE courts need the attested certificate in Arabic. Our MOJ-certified legal translators prepare it through our legal translation service in Dubai, stamps included, with both partners' names exactly as in their passports. After the ceremony you will probably need the marriage certificate itself; see marriage certificate attestation and marriage certificate translation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a single status certificate the same as a certificate of no impediment?

They do the same job, proving you are free to marry. The title and the issuing office depend on your country.

Can my embassy in the UAE issue a single status certificate?

Some embassies and consulates do. Their certificate then goes to MOFA in the UAE and is translated into Arabic.

How recent must the certificate be?

Each registrar sets its own limit, and many prefer a newly issued certificate. Check before ordering if the wedding is still some way off.

Do both partners need a single status certificate?

Usually yes, each for their own status. We plan both routes together.

Can we start before the marriage appointment is booked?

Yes, as long as the certificate will still be within the registrar's validity window on the day.

How long does single status certificate attestation take?

That depends on the issuing country and office. The written quote gives the expected timing.
