A UAE overstay fine builds up for every day someone stays after their visit visa, residence visa or grace period has ended, and it keeps growing until the status is settled. Common causes are ordinary: a visa cancelled without notice, a forgotten renewal, a sponsor who left the country. Wordcraft checks what is outstanding and settles it together with your next step: a new visa, a status change or a legal exit.

How to Check Overstay Fines

  • Online: fines and file status can be checked on the official smart channels of the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) and, for Dubai visas, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), using your passport and file details.
  • Through us: send your passport copy and your last visa or entry stamp on WhatsApp. We check the file, tell you what is outstanding and whether any other issue (such as an absconding report) is attached to it.

Checking first matters, because the right solution depends on whether you overstayed a visit visa, a cancelled residence or an expired one, and on who your last sponsor was.

Grace Periods and Fine Waivers

Before overstay fines start, most visa categories have a grace period after cancellation or expiry. Its length depends on the category and the rules in force; our guide to the grace period after visa cancellation explains how to find your exact last day. From time to time, the UAE authorities announce programmes that waive or reduce fines for people who regularize or leave within a set period. These programmes apply only when officially announced and only for their stated duration, so we confirm whether any waiver is in force when we check your file. Never assume one applies.

Your Options: Settle and Stay, Change Status, or Exit

  • Settle and stay: if you have a new employer, family sponsor or a self-sponsored route, the fines are settled and a new residence is issued, often through a status change inside the country.
  • Renew: if your own residence simply expired and your sponsor still supports you, the renewal is filed after the fines are settled. See residence visa renewal.
  • Exit legally: if you are leaving the UAE, the file is settled so your departure is recorded properly and future visas are not affected more than necessary.

We explain the consequences of each option for your case, including any effect on future visa applications, before you decide.

Documents to Settle an Overstay

  • Original passport (or a valid replacement if it has expired)
  • Copy of the last visa, entry permit or residence and Emirates ID
  • Visa cancellation paper, if the residence was cancelled
  • For a new visa: the new sponsor's documents, such as an employment offer or the family sponsor's passport, visa and Emirates ID
  • Any police, court or labour documents related to the case, if they exist

How a Settlement Runs

  1. Send your passport and last visa on WhatsApp, and tell us briefly what happened.
  2. We check the file and get back to you with a written quote in 10–30 minutes that shows the outstanding amount on the system and our charge.
  3. You choose: settle and stay, renew, change status, or exit.
  4. After payment by secure link, we file the settlement and the next application with GDRFA or ICP.
  5. We confirm the outcome (a new visa, a renewed residence or a cleared exit) and share the documents.

Special Cases: Absconding Reports, Expired Passports and Old Cases

Some overstay files are more complicated. An absconding report filed by a former employer or sponsor, a travel ban, an expired passport, or a case that has been open for years each needs to be dealt with before a new visa can be issued or before you leave. Wordcraft prepares and submits applications to the authorities on your behalf; we are not the authority, and where a matter needs a court or a lawyer we tell you so clearly. For cancellations in the right order, see visa cancellation; for all other visa services, see our visa services.

Fines can be checked through the ICP and GDRFA Dubai smart services.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is the overstay fine in the UAE?

Fines are set by the authorities and depend on the visa type and the length of the overstay. We check your file and confirm the exact amount, together with our service charge, in writing before any work begins.

Is there an amnesty for overstayers in 2026?

Waiver programmes apply only when the authorities announce them, for a limited period. We tell you whether one is in force when we check your file.

Can I get a new visa without leaving the UAE after overstaying?

Often yes, if you have a new sponsor or qualify for a self-sponsored visa: the fines are settled and the new visa is issued through a status change.

Can I pay my overstay fines at the airport?

Outstanding fines are checked when you leave. It is usually better to settle the file before travelling so there are no surprises at departure.

Will overstaying affect my future UAE visas?

It can, depending on the case. Settling the file properly limits the impact, and we explain the likely effect for your situation.
