A visa status change in the UAE moves you from one visa to another without leaving the country, for example from a visit visa to an employment or family residence, or from a cancelled residence to a new one. The request must go in while your current visa or grace period is valid. Wordcraft checks eligibility, prepares the file with your new sponsor and follows it until the residence is issued.
The authorities call it change of status or status amendment. Instead of flying out and re-entering on a new entry permit, the new permit is issued while you stay here, so there is no gap in your legal stay.

Nationality and visa type can change the answer, and the rules are revised from time to time. We confirm your route before you pay any government fee. If an in-country change is not allowed, we arrange the alternative: an entry permit and a short exit and re-entry.
The Six Phases of a Status Change
- Eligibility check. We look at your current visa, its expiry or grace-period end date, your nationality and the route you want.
- New sponsor approval. The work permit from MOHRE or the free zone, the family sponsorship file, or the Golden visa nomination, depending on your route.
- Entry permit and status change application. The new entry permit is issued and the change-of-status request is filed with GDRFA in Dubai or ICP elsewhere, before your current visa or grace period ends.
- Approval. Once approved, your legal stay continues under the new permit and the old visa no longer applies.
- Medical and Emirates ID. Adults take the medical fitness test, and biometrics are booked for the Emirates ID.
- Residence issued. The residence is recorded against your new Emirates ID, with no exit and no gap.
How long this takes depends on the sponsor approval and the medical result, so the estimate comes in your written quote. Official service details are on GDRFA Dubai, ICP and, for work permits, MOHRE.
Visit Visa to Employment, Family or Golden Visa
- Visit to employment: after MOHRE or the free zone approves the work permit, the status change is filed and you continue with the medical and Emirates ID. See our employment visa service.
- Visit to family: a spouse, child or parent on a visit visa can often move straight onto the resident's family sponsorship, provided the relationship certificates are attested. See the family visa and spouse visa pages.
- Visit to Golden or Green: qualifying investors, property owners and professionals can switch without leaving. See the Golden visa and Green visa pages.
Documents for a Change of Status
- Passport and current visa (visit or cancelled residence), with the entry record
- Recent photo
- The new route's approval: work permit, family sponsorship file or Golden visa nomination
- Sponsor's documents: company papers, or the family sponsor's passport, visa, Emirates ID and salary certificate
- Attested certificates the new visa depends on, such as a marriage certificate or degree, with Arabic legal translation where required
Certificates issued abroad are attested in the issuing country and by the UAE embassy there, which now completes the MOFA step digitally. We handle that part too; see documents to attest for a UAE visa.
Deadlines That Decide Whether You Can Switch
Everything depends on filing while you are still legal. A visit visa has a fixed validity, and a cancelled residence has a grace period whose length depends on the category. File the change well before the last day, not on it. If your visit visa is close to expiry, contact us early. If your residence was just cancelled, check the grace period guide or the visa cancellation page, and if you are changing jobs with a residence still active, the visa transfer page may fit better.
Last checked: 29 September 2026 against GDRFA and ICP guidance on in-country change of status.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change from a visit visa to a work visa without leaving the UAE?
In most cases yes, once your employer's work permit is approved. We confirm eligibility for your visa type and nationality before filing.
Can my wife change from a visit visa to a family visa inside the UAE?
Usually yes, if you meet the family sponsorship conditions and her marriage certificate is attested.
What if my visit visa expires during the process?
The change should be filed before expiry. Once filed and approved, your stay continues under the new permit. If the visa has already expired, fines may apply, so contact us at once.
Is a status change always possible?
No. Some visa types or nationalities still need an exit and re-entry. We tell you in the quote which route applies.
Can I change status after my residence is cancelled?
Yes, within the grace period after cancellation. Your new sponsor files the change before that period ends.
Can a student switch to an employment visa after graduating?
Usually yes. The student visa is closed by the university or sponsor and the employer files the change of status, with the degree attested if it was issued abroad.
Do I have to cancel my family visa to start a job?
Not always. You can keep the family visa and work on a MOHRE work permit, or move onto the employer's visa. We explain which suits your case.
Can I switch from an employment visa to a Golden visa?
Yes, if you qualify for a Golden visa category. The Golden visa is issued inside the country and your employment visa is closed.
Will my Emirates ID change?
Yes, a new Emirates ID is issued for the new residence, and we book the biometrics.
How long does a status change take?
It depends on the sponsor approval and the medical result. The written quote gives an estimate for your file.
How much does a status change cost?
The government fee depends on the route. Your quote lists it with our charge before you pay.
