A power of attorney for India from the UAE lets an NRI living here authorize a relative or trusted person in India to sell or buy property, operate a bank account, handle a court case or collect rent. Indian sub-registrars, banks and courts check both the wording and the attestation. Wordcraft drafts the POA in the format they expect, arranges UAE notarization and plans the MOFA and Indian mission steps.
We are not a consulate or an Indian lawyer. The Indian mission attests, the sub-registrar or bank in India decides whether to accept, and your attorney there handles stamping and registration. Our part is getting the document right before it leaves the UAE.
Two Routes: Indian Mission or UAE Notary + MOFA
| Route | Steps | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Indian mission route | The POA is signed or attested at the Indian Consulate in Dubai or the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi, directly or through its appointed service center | Widely used for property and bank POAs; appointment and document rules are set by the mission |
| UAE notary + MOFA route | UAE notary, then MOFA attestation (digital), then attestation by the Indian mission in the UAE | Used when the document must first be notarized in the UAE, or when the receiving party asks for it |
Before you sign anything, we confirm which of the two routes your sub-registrar, bank or lawyer in India will accept. A UAE-notarized POA travels to India through MOFA's digital attestation and then the Indian mission, since the UAE does not issue apostilles. The general chain for any destination country is on notarization for use abroad, and the MOFA step itself on MOFA attestation.
Wording Indian Registrars and Banks Expect
- Property: sell, buy, gift or lease a named property; sign the sale deed; appear before the sub-registrar; receive the sale price; pay taxes and dues; obtain encumbrance certificates and mutation. The property is identified by survey or door number and address, exactly as in the title documents.
- Bank: operate an NRE/NRO or resident account, deal with a loan or locker, and complete KYC. Many Indian banks insist on their own POA format, so we check with your branch first.
- Court and family matters: engage a lawyer, file or defend a case, deal with succession or family property.
Indian POAs often carry passport-size photographs of the principal and the names of witnesses. We follow the format your lawyer or authority sends, or draft in the style they usually accept. For a POA to be used inside the UAE instead, see power of attorney services; if Hindi documents from India need translating for use here, see Hindi legal translation.
After It Reaches India: Stamping and Registration
The work is not finished when the original lands in India. A POA executed abroad normally has to be stamped (adjudicated) within the period set by that state's stamp law after it is received, and a POA used for a property transaction may also need registration. Your attorney or lawyer in India takes care of this, so tell them the courier date. We send the attested original by courier to the address you give us.
What to Send Us From Both Sides
- Your original passport with a valid UAE residence visa, and your Emirates ID
- A copy of the attorney's passport, Aadhaar or PAN
- For property: the sale deed or title papers and tax receipts; for a bank: account and branch details
- Passport-size photographs and witness names, if the Indian format asks for them
- Any draft wording from your lawyer, bank or sub-registrar in India
From Draft to Courier: How We Handle an NRI POA
- Route check: send the property or bank details on WhatsApp. The free written quote, ready in 10 to 30 minutes, names the route your Indian authority takes.
- Drafting: the POA in English in the Indian format, with an Arabic version only if the UAE notary needs one. You approve it, ideally after your lawyer in India has seen it too.
- Signing and attestation: UAE notary, digital MOFA attestation and the Indian mission, or the Indian mission alone. We collect and return the originals.
- Courier to India: the attested original goes to your attorney, ready for stamping.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a POA in Dubai for property in India?
Yes. We draft it in the Indian format, and the Indian mission then attests it, either directly or after UAE notarization and MOFA attestation.
Is MOFA attestation needed for a POA going to India?
Only on the UAE notary route: MOFA attests the notarized POA digitally before it goes to the Indian mission. A POA signed at the Indian mission itself does not usually need a separate MOFA step. We tell you which applies.
Does the POA need to be stamped in India?
In most cases, yes. Stamp duty is paid in India within the period the state's stamp law allows after the POA arrives, and a property POA may also have to be registered.
Can the POA be in English?
Yes. Indian authorities accept English; we add Arabic only when the UAE notary asks for it.
Do you also attest Indian certificates for use in the UAE?
Yes, for educational and personal documents issued in India. See Indian certificate attestation.
