The grace period after visa cancellation in the UAE is the time you are allowed to stay after your residence is cancelled, to leave, switch to a new visa or move to a new sponsor without overstay fines. Its length depends on your visa category and the rules in force, and it usually starts when the cancellation is completed in the system. Wordcraft checks your last day and files your next step.
What the Grace Period Is and When It Starts
A residence visa does not simply end on the day it is cancelled. The residency authority (the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) for Dubai visas, or the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) for the other emirates) gives the former resident a period to regularize their status. The count normally starts from the date the cancellation is completed in the system, not from your last working day or the date you resigned. That is why the first thing to check is the cancellation date itself.
A grace period also applies when a residence visa expires without being renewed. Visit visas work differently: they are tied to the permitted stay on your entry permit, so a visitor should check the validity of the visa rather than count on a grace period.
Grace Period by Visa Category
The length of the grace period depends on your visa category and on the rules in force at the time of cancellation. Instead of quoting figures that may already be out of date, the table shows what decides your period and who controls the cancellation.
| Visa category | Who files the cancellation | What decides your grace period |
|---|---|---|
| Employment (mainland) | Employer, through MOHRE and then GDRFA or ICP | Residence category and the rules in force; check the completed cancellation date |
| Employment (free zone) | The free zone authority on the employer's request | Same as above; free zone cancellations follow the residency authority's rules |
| Family members | The family sponsor | Dependants' category; if the sponsor leaves, dependants are cancelled first |
| Domestic workers | The household sponsor | Domestic worker rules in force |
| Golden and Green visas | The holder (self-sponsored) | Long-term residence rules in force, confirmed for your file |
We confirm the exact grace period for your case, from your own file, before you make any plans.
How to Find Your Exact Last Day
- Ask your employer or sponsor for the cancellation confirmation as soon as it is issued, and note the date on it.
- Check your file status on the official ICP or GDRFA smart channels using your passport and file details.
- Send us a copy of the cancellation and your passport on WhatsApp; we check the status and tell you the last date to act, free as part of your quote.
Do not rely on a colleague's experience: two people cancelled in the same month can have different categories and different periods.
What You Can Do During the Grace Period
- Start a new job: your new employer applies for a work permit and a status change so you stay in the UAE. See visa transfer and job change.
- Move to family sponsorship: a spouse or parent with a valid residence can sponsor you inside the country.
- Apply for a self-sponsored visa: if you qualify for a Golden, Green, retirement or remote work visa.
- Change to a visit visa: where the rules allow, to give yourself more time while you look for work.
- Leave the UAE: before the period ends, with no fines.
If You Pass the Grace Period: Fines and Settlement
Staying after the grace period without a new visa means you are overstaying, and daily fines build up until your status is settled. Overstaying can also complicate future visa applications. If this has already happened, do not wait: the sooner the fines are checked and settled, the more options you usually have. Our overstay fine settlement service checks your file, explains the options and handles the settlement, status change or exit.
A Short Grace Period Checklist
- Get the cancellation confirmation and note the completed cancellation date.
- Confirm the exact grace period for your category.
- Decide: new job, family sponsorship, self-sponsored visa, visit visa or exit.
- Collect the documents early: attested degree for a new skilled job, attested marriage or birth certificate for family sponsorship.
- File the new visa or status change well before the last day, not on it.
Where Wordcraft Comes In Before Your Last Day
Wordcraft prepares and submits applications to ICP, GDRFA and MOHRE on your behalf; we are not the authority. From our offices in Dubai (Al Twar), Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah we check your grace period, prepare the next visa and attest or translate the documents it needs, with a written quote in 10–30 minutes. If you are cancelling rather than moving, our visa cancellation page explains the correct order for dependants, and our guide to visa cancellation and renewal covers the background.
Cancellation and grace-period services are listed by ICP and GDRFA Dubai.
Last checked: 29 September 2026 against ICP and GDRFA guidance on post-cancellation grace periods.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many days do I have after my visa is cancelled?
It depends on your visa category and the rules in force. We confirm the exact period from your own file before you plan anything.
Does the grace period start on my last working day?
No. It normally starts when the cancellation is completed in the system, which can be later than your last working day.
Can I look for a job during the grace period?
Yes. If you find one, your new employer can apply for a status change so you move to the new visa without leaving.
Is the grace period the same for Golden visa holders?
Long-term visas follow their own rules. We confirm the period that applies to your Golden or Green visa at the time of cancellation.
What happens if I stay one day longer?
Overstay fines start once the grace period ends. Contact us straight away so we can check and settle your status.
