Visa cancellation in the UAE closes a residence visa when the holder leaves the country for good, changes sponsor or moves to another visa type. In Dubai it is filed with GDRFA and in the other emirates with ICP, after any MOHRE or free zone step. Wordcraft files cancellations for families, domestic workers and employees, in the right order, and lines up the next visa if you are staying.
Two mistakes cause most of the trouble we see: a sponsor who tries to cancel his own visa while his family's visas are still active, and a person who misses the end of the grace period while waiting for a new job offer.
Who Cancels Which Visa
| Visa holder | Who files the cancellation | First step | Then |
|---|---|---|---|
| Employee (mainland company) | The employer | Work permit cancelled with MOHRE; the employee signs the cancellation | Residence cancelled with GDRFA or ICP |
| Employee (free zone company) | The free zone company | Cancellation request on the free zone authority's portal | Residence cancelled with GDRFA or ICP |
| Spouse, children, parents | The family sponsor | Sponsor's request, with the family member's passport or passport copy | Residence cancelled with GDRFA or ICP |
| Investor or partner | The investor, through the company | Company documents updated where the partnership changes | Residence cancelled with GDRFA or ICP |
| Domestic worker | The household sponsor | Contract and permit closed through MOHRE's domestic worker channels | Residence cancelled with GDRFA or ICP |
| Golden visa holder | The holder | Family members' visas cancelled first | Golden residence cancelled with GDRFA or ICP |
The order matters. A sponsor normally has to cancel the visas of the family members and domestic workers they sponsor before their own visa can be cancelled. We plan the sequence for the whole household in one request.
Cancellation Channels: Inside or Outside the UAE
| Channel | Holder inside the UAE | Holder already abroad |
|---|---|---|
| Online (GDRFA or ICP smart services) | Available for most family and domestic worker visas | Available to the sponsor for many visa types |
| Service center or the free zone / MOHRE channel | Used for employment visas and cases the system cannot complete online | The sponsor or company attends; the holder does not need to return |
| Wordcraft files for you | We prepare the forms, get them signed and file | We file with the passport copy and supporting documents |
Inside the UAE: once the cancellation is complete, a grace period starts. During it the person can leave, change status to a new visa or be sponsored by someone else.
Outside the UAE: if the person has already left, the sponsor can usually cancel from inside the country with a passport copy. This is common when a family member has moved home or a domestic worker did not return from leave.
The official service descriptions are on ICP and GDRFA Dubai; employment-side steps are on MOHRE.
The Grace Period After Cancellation
A cancelled residence does not end your legal stay on the same day. The holder gets a grace period to leave the UAE or move onto a new visa. How long it lasts depends on your category and the current rules; the clock usually starts once the system shows the cancellation as complete, which can be days after your last working day. Staying beyond it without a new visa leads to daily fines. Our grace period guide explains how to find your last day, and if you are staying we file a status change before it runs out.
Documents for a Visa Cancellation
- Original passport (or a clear copy if the person is abroad) and Emirates ID
- Sponsor's passport, residence visa and Emirates ID
- Cancellation form signed by the sponsor, which we prepare
- For employees: the signed MOHRE or free zone cancellation papers from the employer
- For domestic workers: the worker's contract details and the sponsor's documents
- For investors: updated company documents where a partner is leaving
Before You Sign: Checks for Employees and Sponsors
- Employees: confirm your final settlement and end-of-service figures with your employer before you sign the MOHRE cancellation. Once signed, the grace period clock starts soon after.
- Family sponsors changing jobs: you may not need to cancel your family at all. When the new employer issues your residence, the family can be moved across; see visa transfer after a job change.
- Leaving for good: cancel dependants first, then your own visa, and keep the cancellation confirmation. Banks and landlords often ask for it.
- Overstay already running: fines are settled before the cancellation can complete. See overstay settlement.
How We File Your Cancellation
Send passport and visa copies on WhatsApp and tell us whether the person is in the UAE or abroad. You get a written quote within 10–30 minutes. After payment by secure link we prepare the forms for signature, file with GDRFA in Dubai or ICP elsewhere in the correct order for dependants, and send you the cancellation confirmation. If you are staying, we start the next visa the same day. Renewing instead? See residence visa renewal, or read our cancellation and renewal guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long can I stay in the UAE after my visa is cancelled?
You have a grace period whose length depends on your visa category and the rules in force. We confirm the exact period, and your last day, for your case.
Can I cancel my wife's visa while she is outside the UAE?
Usually yes. The sponsor files the cancellation from inside the UAE with a copy of her passport and the supporting documents.
Do I have to cancel my family's visas before my own?
Yes. Dependants' visas are normally cancelled first, then the sponsor's own visa.
Can I move to a new visa without leaving after cancellation?
In most cases yes, through a status change inside the country filed within the grace period.
Who cancels my employment visa?
Your employer. It cancels the work permit with MOHRE or the free zone first, then the residence. You sign the cancellation, so check your settlement before you do.
Can I cancel a family visa online?
Many family and domestic worker cancellations can be filed through the GDRFA or ICP smart services. Some cases still need a service center, and we tell you which applies.
What happens to my Emirates ID after cancellation?
It stops being valid as proof of residence once the cancellation is complete, even if the card shows a later expiry date.
Will a cancellation stop me getting a UAE visa later?
A normal cancellation does not. Unsettled overstay fines, absconding reports or court cases are different, and we check for them before filing.
Can I cancel my domestic worker's visa if she has already left?
Yes, the household sponsor can cancel with a copy of her passport and the contract details.
How long does a cancellation take?
Usually not long once every signature is in place, but it varies by visa type and channel, and your quote includes an estimate.
How much does a visa cancellation cost?
The quote lists the government fee for each visa in the household and our charge, so you see the total before paying.
