Residence visa renewal in the UAE extends an expiring residence for another term, and in Dubai and every other emirate it combines four things: a renewal application, a medical fitness test for adults, valid health insurance and a renewed Emirates ID. How Residence Visa Renewal Works in Dubai and the Other Emirates, Step by Step
- Check the expiry date and the window. Renewal can start shortly before the visa expires; the exact window is set by the authority and we confirm it for your visa type.
- Renew the work permit first (employment visas only). Mainland employers renew the contract and work permit with MOHRE; free zone companies get the approval from their free zone authority.
- Health insurance. Each person needs a policy valid for the new term where the emirate or visa type requires it. Dubai and Abu Dhabi require it for every resident.
- Medical fitness test. Adults generally repeat it at renewal. We book it at an approved center near your home or office.
- Renewal application with the Emirates ID. Filed with GDRFA if you live in Dubai, or with ICP in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and the other emirates. The Emirates ID renewal goes in the same request.
- Biometrics, if asked. ICP or GDRFA may call you for new fingerprints and a photo; we book the slot.
- New Emirates ID. Residence is no longer stamped in the passport. The renewed status is recorded electronically and the new card is delivered by courier.

Family members who were sponsored with attested marriage or birth certificates do not usually need those certificates attested again at renewal. A son who has turned 18 or a relative in a special situation may need an extra letter, and we list it before filing.
What Changes Between Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah
The steps are the same across the country, but the authority and a few local rules differ. Dubai residents renew through GDRFA Dubai; everyone else uses ICP. Tenancy registration has local names (Ejari in Dubai, Tawtheeq in Abu Dhabi), insurance rules are stricter in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and medical centers and appointment slots are booked per emirate. Renewing the Family in the Right Order
Family visas hang on the sponsor's residence. The sponsor's own visa must be valid, or renewed first, before the spouse, children or parents can be renewed. When a sponsor changes jobs, the family is moved across once the new residence is issued; see visa transfer after a job change. If Your Residence Visa Has Already Expired
After a residence expires there is a grace period, and once it ends a fine accrues for every day of overstay. An expired residence also blocks things you use daily: bank account updates, car registration and your family's own renewals. Do not wait for the next month.
