Golden visa vs Green visa: both are self-sponsored UAE residences that free you from an employer's sponsorship and let you bring your family. The Golden visa runs for 10 years and suits property owners, high earners, investors and recognized talent; the Green visa runs for 5 years and suits skilled employees and business partners. Wordcraft checks which one you qualify for and files it with ICP or GDRFA.

What Each Visa Is Designed For

The Golden visa rewards people the UAE wants to keep for the long term: property investors, high earners in skilled jobs, company owners, scientists, creatives, top students and, more recently, long-serving professionals in sectors such as healthcare and education. Its ten-year validity is the main attraction, together with wide family sponsorship.

The Green visa is the middle step between a standard two-year employer-sponsored residence and the Golden visa. It is aimed at skilled employees who want independence from their employer, and at investors or partners in UAE companies who do not reach the Golden visa level. It is shorter, but the conditions are usually easier to document.

Who Should Choose Which

  • You own UAE property worth AED 2M or more: the Golden visa is the natural choice; there is no Green visa property route.
  • You earn AED 30,000 a month in a skilled job with a bachelor's degree: check the Golden visa for professionals first. See Golden visa for professionals.
  • You are a skilled employee below the Golden salary level: the Green visa for skilled employees is usually the better fit, provided your job and salary meet the current Green conditions.
  • You are a partner or investor in a UAE company: compare the Green visa investor route, the standard investor visa and the Golden visa investor category; the size and type of your investment decide.
  • You are a doctor, nurse, teacher, creator or top student: these are Golden visa categories that depend on a nomination; there is no Green visa equivalent.

If you are close to a Golden visa condition, it is usually worth confirming that route first, because the longer validity saves you one or two renewals.

Family Sponsorship Differences

Both visas let you sponsor your spouse and children. Golden visa holders can often add their parents too, and the family members normally receive residence of the same length. On the Green visa, family sponsorship follows the conditions in force for that route, which we confirm at application. In both cases each family member needs a passport, photo and an attested relationship document: a marriage certificate for your spouse and birth certificates for children, translated into Arabic where the authority requires it. We handle marriage certificate attestation and birth certificate attestation in the same file.

Changing Jobs, Travel and Renewal

Because both visas are self-sponsored, changing employer does not cancel your residence. What matters is renewal: you must still meet the condition of your route when the visa comes up for renewal. A Golden visa professional needs to keep the qualifying salary; a Green visa employee needs a job that still meets the Green conditions; a property owner must still own the qualifying property.

The Golden visa is designed for long-term residents and is generally not tied to the stay-abroad limit that applies to a standard residence. If you expect to spend long periods outside the UAE, tell us before you choose, and we confirm the current rule for the visa you are considering.

Documents Both Visas Have in Common

  • Passport valid for at least six months and a recent photo
  • Current visa and Emirates ID, if you already live in the UAE
  • Valid health insurance
  • Your degree attested for UAE use, with an equivalency certificate where the authority asks for one (employee and professional routes)
  • Employment contract and salary certificate, or trade license and memorandum of association, depending on the route
  • Title deed for the property route

How Wordcraft Helps You Decide

  1. Send your passport and a short description of your job, salary, property or company on WhatsApp.
  2. We tell you which routes you qualify for and which one gives you the best result, in a written quote within 10–30 minutes.
  3. You approve the quote and pay by secure link; nothing is added afterward.
  4. We attest and translate your documents, file the application with ICP or GDRFA, book the medical test (where required) and Emirates ID biometrics, and track everything online.

Full details of each route are on our Golden visa services and Green visa pages. Either way, ICP or GDRFA makes the final decision; our job is a complete, correctly attested file.

The official category lists for both visas are on u.ae and the ICP website.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Golden visa better than the Green visa?

It lasts twice as long and usually offers wider family sponsorship, so it is the better visa if you qualify. If you do not meet a Golden condition, the Green visa still gives you five years of self-sponsored residence.

Can I switch from a Green visa to a Golden visa?

Yes. If your salary, property or investment later reaches a Golden visa condition, you can apply for the Golden visa; we manage the change so there is no gap in your status.

Do both visas let me change jobs freely?

Both are self-sponsored, so a job change does not cancel the visa. You must still meet your route's condition at renewal.

Which visa is quicker to get?

Processing depends on the category rather than the visa name. Routes that need a nomination take longer; we give you a realistic timeline in your quote.

How much do the Golden and Green visas cost?

Fees differ between the two visas and grow with each family member. Once we know your route, the written quote lists them next to our charge.
