How Long Does Certificate Attestation Take for the UAE?

Wordcraft editorial teamReviewed by our legal documentation specialists

How long certificate attestation takes for the UAE depends mostly on where the certificate was issued. A UAE-issued digital document can move through MOFA online, while a foreign degree has to clear its home-country steps first and then the UAE embassy’s digital attestation. The home-country part is usually the slowest, so start there.

Say HR has just told you your degree must be attested before your visa can move. The first question isn’t “how many days?” but “which offices will touch this certificate, and in what order?” Once you know the chain, you can plan the time. If you’d rather hand the whole chain to someone, our certificate attestation service in Dubai handles each step and tells you where your file is at every stage.

Below we walk through each stage, who controls it, and what actually slows people down. We’ve kept to what official sources say. Where an office doesn’t publish a timing, we say so instead of guessing.

Why there is no single answer to “how long does attestation take”

Attestation is a chain of signatures. Each office confirms the signature or seal of the office before it. So the total time is the sum of several queues, run by different governments, and only one of them is in the UAE.

Three things decide the length of your chain:

  • Country of issue. A certificate from India goes through India’s Ministry of External Affairs before the UAE Embassy in New Delhi. A UAE-issued document goes straight to MOFA in the UAE.
  • Document type. Personal documents (degree, birth, marriage) and commercial documents follow different rules, and commercial invoices and certificates of origin use a separate MOFA system called eDAS.
  • Where it will be used. For UAE documents going abroad, MOFA asks for the destination country, and that decides whether the destination’s embassy step is included.

Stage by stage: who does what

Here is the usual chain for a foreign degree that will be used in Dubai, with what each office publishes about its own timing.

Stage Who does it What decides the time
1. University or issuing body check The university or board, sometimes a state education department Their own process. Varies a lot by country and institution.
2. National attestation (home country) The foreign ministry of the issuing country (for India, the MEA) That ministry’s queue and rules. Check its own site.
3. Courier collection for UAE digital attestation A MOFA-approved service provider For India, the UAE Embassy in New Delhi says the courier collects within 24 hours of a successful online submission.
4. UAE Embassy + MOFA digital attestation UAE Embassy in the issuing country, with MOFA, in one application Embassy processing. You get the digitally attested document by email.
5. Return of the original The courier For India, delivery within 24 to 48 hours after release from the embassy (48 to 72 hours for remote areas), per the embassy page.
6. Legal translation (if the receiving office needs Arabic) An MOJ-licensed legal translator in the UAE Length of the document and your deadline.

Notice where the numbers are. The only published timings we could confirm today are the courier ones. Nobody publishes a guaranteed figure for the whole chain, and you should be careful with anyone who does.

Digital attestation changed the UAE end of the chain

The old route was “embassy abroad, then MOFA in the UAE” with a sticker on the back. That isn’t how it works now for countries on the digital system. The UAE Embassy in New Delhi, for example, says one application covers both the embassy and MOFA, and the result is an emailed, digitally attested document that is legally recognised in the UAE. Your original goes back to you by courier.

Two practical effects:

  1. There is no separate MOFA visit in the UAE for those documents, so one step and its waiting time drop out.
  2. The digital copy carries a reference number and issue date, which you can check on MOFA’s verification page. Our guide on how to verify a MOFA attestation shows what to look for.

MOFA’s own service page says this route is available through selected UAE missions, so check the mission page for the country your certificate comes from before you plan around it.

For UAE-issued documents: digital or courier, MOFA decides

If your document was issued in the UAE (a UAE university degree, a UAE marriage certificate) and you need it attested, MOFA’s site works out the route for you. You don’t get to pick. A supported digital document with a QR code, barcode or reference number goes through Digital Attestation and comes back by email or through “My Requests”. Anything else goes through an approved courier provider, where you choose a collection and delivery schedule.

Small things matter here. MOFA says a scanned copy or photo is not an “original digital document”, the application can’t be changed after you submit it, and you can put up to five documents in one application only if they all use the same route. Picking the wrong issuing authority to try to get a faster route can get the application rejected. You can read the details on MOFA’s attestation service page.

What actually makes attestation take longer

A lot of lost time has nothing to do with queues. It comes from avoidable problems with the file itself:

  • The home-country step was skipped. The UAE embassy will only attest a document that the issuing country’s foreign ministry has already attested.
  • Laminated certificates. The New Delhi mission page says laminated documents can’t be attested. If yours is laminated, you may need a fresh copy from the issuer.
  • Bundled apostilles. Documents apostilled together in one bundle are not accepted; each needs its own.
  • Copies instead of originals. Birth, marriage and death certificates must be originals.
  • Names that don’t match. A different spelling on the passport and the degree causes questions later, often at the translation or visa stage.
  • Wrong details in the online application. MOFA lists mismatched information as a rejection reason, and a rejected application means starting again.

If an application is rejected, the New Delhi page says the attestation fee is refunded but the service fee is not, and the originals come back so you can resubmit. That’s time and money you don’t get back, which is why checking the file before you start pays off.

How to plan around a job offer or visa deadline

You can’t speed up a foreign ministry, but you can stop wasting days. A simple order that works:

  1. Ask HR or the receiving office exactly which documents they need attested and whether they also need an Arabic translation.
  2. Check each certificate for lamination, damage and name spelling against your passport.
  3. Start the home-country step first. It is usually the longest and nothing else can begin before it.
  4. Apply for the UAE digital attestation as soon as the national attestation is done.
  5. Order the legal translation once the attested document is back, so the translator works on the final version. Not sure which comes first? See translate or attest first.
  6. If your degree is for MOHESR equivalency (now called University Certificates Recognition), add that step to your plan. Our equivalency certificate page explains what it involves.

Tell your employer early if the home-country step looks slow. Most HR teams would rather hear “it’s in progress at the ministry” with proof than nothing at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does degree certificate attestation take for the UAE?

It depends on the country that issued the degree. The home-country checks and foreign-ministry step usually take the longest, and each country sets its own timing. On the UAE side, for India the embassy says the courier collects within 24 hours of online submission and returns originals within 24 to 48 hours after release. Check the mission page for your country.

How many days does UAE embassy attestation take?

MOFA does not publish one fixed number for every embassy. For countries on digital attestation, one application covers the UAE embassy and MOFA, and you get the attested document by email. Courier timings are published on some mission pages, such as New Delhi. Ask the mission in the issuing country or let us check it for your document.

Do I still need MOFA attestation in the UAE after the embassy?

Not for documents attested through the digital system. The UAE Embassy in New Delhi, for example, says one application covers both the embassy and MOFA. MOFA says the service runs through selected missions, so confirm your country is included. Our MOFA attestation service page explains both routes.

Can I pay extra to make attestation faster?

Some offices abroad offer an urgent option, but that is set by each government and changes. Nobody in the UAE can speed up a foreign ministry’s queue. What you can control is a clean file: correct originals, no lamination, matching names and accurate application details, so nothing gets rejected and restarted.

What happens if my attestation application is rejected?

For India, the UAE Embassy in New Delhi says the attestation fee is refunded automatically, the service and delivery fee is not, and your originals are returned so you can fix the issue and apply again. MOFA’s page lists common reasons, such as details that don’t match the document or a wrongly chosen issuing authority.
