How to Verify a MOFA Attestation in the UAE (and What It Looks Like)

Wordcraft editorial teamReviewed by our legal documentation specialists

To verify a MOFA attestation, open the last page of the attested document, find the attestation reference number and the date printed next to it, and enter both on the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs verification portal at verify.mofa.gov.ae. If the details match, the attestation is genuine and the document is the one the ministry attested.

That is the short version. The rest of this guide covers what a current MOFA attestation actually looks like, what to do when the portal doesn’t find your document, and why employers, universities and embassies are asking for this check more often than they used to.

What a MOFA Attestation Looks Like Today

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs now attests most UAE documents digitally, and the layout changed with it. According to the ministry’s own service page, the attestation appears on the last page of the document and includes the attestation reference number, the attestation date, the amount paid and a verification element.

So the first thing to do is look at the last page, not the first. People often photograph the certificate itself and forget that the proof sits on a separate page at the back. If you only have a picture of the front, you can’t verify anything.

A few things worth knowing before you go hunting:

  • The reference number is the key. Everything else is a cross-check.
  • The date printed with it is what the portal asks for, so write it exactly as shown.
  • The verification element (the ministry describes it as part of the attestation) lets whoever receives the document check it electronically.

Documents attested years ago may look different from the current format. If you are holding an older one, don’t assume it is fake because it doesn’t match what you see online today. Check it on the portal and, if that fails, ask the ministry.

How to Verify a MOFA Attestation, Step by Step

  1. Find the last page of the attested document and locate the attestation reference number and date.
  2. Open the MOFA verification portal. Use the official address, not a link someone sent you in a message.
  3. Enter the reference number exactly as printed. Watch for the letter O and the number 0, and for the letter I and the number 1.
  4. Enter the date printed with the reference number.
  5. Submit and read what comes back. The result should correspond to the document you are holding.

It takes about two minutes. If you are the person who has to accept the document (an HR officer, a university admissions team, a bank), this is the step to do before you file it, not after a problem appears.

Digital, Courier and Older Documents: Why They Don’t All Behave the Same

MOFA currently runs two routes for UAE-issued documents: digital attestation and courier-based attestation. The ministry says the route is decided automatically, depending on whether the document meets the digital requirements.

A document goes the digital way only if it was issued in the UAE by a supported authority, is an original digital document, is clear and unaltered, and carries a verification mechanism such as a QR code, barcode, electronic link or reference number. Everything else goes through an approved courier provider.

For you, as the person holding the paper, the practical differences are these:

  • Digital route: quick to verify, because the document was built to be checked electronically.
  • Courier route: still carries an attestation reference number, but make sure you keep the full attested set together, including the last page.
  • Documents from abroad: these usually reach MOFA through the UAE embassy in the issuing country. As we explain on our MOFA attestation page, the embassy stage now includes MOFA digitally in most cases, so check what reference details your own document shows before you decide which portal to use.

As of October 2026, the ministry lists digital attestation for UAE documents as completed within a couple of hours during working hours, and courier-based attestation inside the UAE at one to three business days. Those figures come from the ministry and can change, so look at the official service page before you promise a timeline to anyone.

What to Do If the Portal Can’t Find Your Document

Don’t panic yet. Most failed checks turn out to be typing mistakes. Go through this list first:

  • Re-type the reference number slowly. Copying from a photo often swaps similar characters.
  • Check the date format shown on the page and enter it the same way.
  • Make sure you are reading the reference from the attestation itself and not from another number on the certificate, such as the original issuing authority’s serial number.
  • Try again after a short while. Government systems occasionally lag right after an attestation is issued.

If it still fails, stop using the document and contact the ministry through its official channels with the document in hand. Don’t pay anyone who offers to “fix the record” for you. A genuine attestation shouldn’t need fixing.

Who Actually Asks for This Check

More people than you’d think. The request usually comes from:

  • Employers checking degree and experience certificates before an offer becomes final.
  • Universities and recognition offices reviewing documents for admission or equivalency.
  • Banks and visa sections when marriage or birth certificates support an application.
  • Embassies of the receiving country, when a UAE document is going abroad.

If you are the applicant, you can save everyone time by sending the full attested document with the last page visible, and by telling the recipient that the reference number can be checked on the ministry’s portal. That one sentence often ends the back-and-forth.

Common Mistakes That Cause Trouble Later

  • Sending only a photo of the front page. The recipient can’t verify what they can’t see.
  • Splitting the set. Staples come out, pages get separated, and the attestation page ends up in a drawer. Keep it together.
  • Writing the number down by hand and getting one character wrong.
  • Assuming a translation carries its own attestation. Check the translation separately. If your document needs an Arabic or English version for the receiving authority, see our certified translation service and ask which stamp that authority expects.
  • Trusting a screenshot of a “verification result” sent by someone else. Run the check yourself on the official portal.

Where Wordcraft Comes In

We handle the whole attestation chain for individuals and companies: the issuing-country steps, the UAE embassy, MOFA, and the Arabic translation where it’s needed. When the attested set comes back, we go through it with you and show you where the reference number is and how to check it on the ministry portal, so you aren’t the one finding a problem at the HR desk.

Pickup and delivery can be arranged, and we confirm the fees and our service charge in writing before any work begins. Send a photo of your document on WhatsApp at +971 56 681 3996 or call the toll-free line 800 9673, and we’ll tell you which route applies. You can also see all our attestation services or the embassy attestation page if your document is coming from abroad.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find the MOFA reference number on my document?

On the last page of the attested document. The ministry says the attestation appears there and includes the reference number, the attestation date, the amount paid and a verification element. If you can’t find it, you may be looking at the wrong page of the set.

Is there an official place to verify a MOFA attestation?

Yes. The ministry runs a verification portal at verify.mofa.gov.ae. You enter the attestation reference number and the date. Use only the official address, and don’t rely on a result someone else forwards to you.

Can I verify a document that was attested a few years ago?

You can try. Older attestations may look different from the current digital layout, and not every older document behaves the same way online. If the portal can’t find yours, contact the ministry before you submit the document anywhere important.

Does the embassy attestation also need to be verified on the MOFA portal?

It depends on the route and the date. For many foreign documents the embassy stage now includes MOFA digitally, so the paper shows a MOFA reference. Check what your own document shows. When in doubt, ask the issuing office or us before relying on it.

What if the portal finds the document but the details look wrong?

Treat it as a problem and don’t submit the document. Compare the name, document type and dates with what you hold. If something doesn’t match, go back to the office that arranged the attestation, or send it to us and we’ll trace where the difference came from.
