Which Documents Need MOFA Attestation? A UAE Checklist

Wordcraft editorial teamReviewed by our legal documentation specialists

Which documents need MOFA attestation in the UAE? Any official document you want a UAE authority to accept, or a UAE document you want used abroad, usually needs it. That covers degree certificates for jobs, birth and marriage certificates for family visas, and company papers like contracts and trademark registrations. The receiving office decides, so ask them first.

MOFA attestation confirms that the stamp and signature on a document are genuine. It doesn’t check what the document says. Below is a checklist by document type, built from what the UAE’s official portal and MOFA’s own service page say today, so you can see where your paper fits before you start. If you’d rather hand the whole thing over, our MOFA attestation service covers both routes, and our team handles certificate attestation in Dubai every day.

First question: where was the document issued?

MOFA splits everything into two routes, and the route matters more than the document type.

Issued What happens Result
Inside the UAE The issuing government entity attests it first, then you apply through MOFA’s digital channels. Digital documents need their QR code or verification link. A MOFA attestation you can use abroad
Outside the UAE The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the issuing country attests it, then the UAE embassy or consulate there, applied for through digital channels at selected missions. A digitally attested document with a reference number you can check on verify.mofa.gov.ae

For documents from abroad, there is no extra MOFA counter visit in the UAE when the mission offers digital attestation. Check your country’s UAE mission page, because MOFA says the online service runs through selected missions, and some countries still need an in-person visit. Our guide on how to verify a MOFA attestation shows what the finished result looks like.

Educational documents: degrees, diplomas and transcripts

The UAE’s official portal (Preparing to work, u.ae) says certain jobs need attested academic certificates to complete residency and employment steps, and that some professions also need the degree recognised by the Ministry of Education. In practice this is the most common reason people come to us.

  • Degree certificate (original, not laminated)
  • Transcript or mark sheets, if your employer or the recognition application asks for them
  • School leaving certificate, usually for school admission or a child’s file
  • Passport copy matching the name on the certificate

Attestation and recognition are two separate things. Our degree attestation documents checklist goes deeper, and the degree certificate attestation page explains how we handle it.

Personal and family documents

The official portal lists birth, death and marriage certificates among the personal documents MOFA attests. These come up whenever family life crosses a border: a spouse visa, a newborn’s residency, an inheritance file.

  • Marriage certificate: for sponsoring a spouse, or for a marriage registered abroad. See marriage certificate attestation.
  • Birth certificate: for sponsoring children and for school files.
  • Death certificate: for estate, bank and insurance matters.
  • Divorce certificate or decree: when a new marriage or custody file needs it.

The u.ae marriage pages add one more step for Sharia marriages: documents issued outside the UAE must be attested and translated into Arabic by an authorised translator.

Commercial and company documents

According to u.ae, MOFA also attests commercial documents, including contracts and agreements, minutes of meetings, trademark registrations and company closure documents. Typical cases:

  1. A parent company’s board resolution to open a UAE branch
  2. A certificate of incorporation or good standing from abroad
  3. A UAE contract or power of attorney that a foreign bank or court wants to see
  4. Company closure papers needed in another country

Commercial invoices and certificates of origin are different. MOFA’s FAQ says they go through its separate eDAS system, not the documents attestation service. Our commercial document attestation page covers company paperwork.

Legal papers often need both attestation and translation. The u.ae civil cases page says a judgment issued abroad must be attested by MOFA before it can be enforced in the UAE. A power of attorney signed abroad for use here, or signed here for use abroad, normally follows the same chain. A police clearance certificate for a visa or job abroad is another regular one.

If the document is not in Arabic or English, MOFA’s page says it must come with a legally certified translation. That’s where our legal translation in Dubai fits in, done by MOJ-licensed legal translators.

What gets an attestation application rejected

MOFA’s documents attestation service page states that applications not completed correctly are rejected automatically. The usual causes we see are simple and avoidable:

  • A laminated original. MOFA says the document must not be laminated.
  • Skipping the issuing authority’s own attestation before MOFA.
  • A document in a third language with no certified translation.
  • A digital UAE document uploaded without its QR code or verification link.
  • Names spelled differently on the certificate and the passport.

A quick checklist before you apply

  1. Ask the receiving office exactly which documents they need attested.
  2. Check where each document was issued; that sets the route.
  3. Get the issuing authority’s attestation first.
  4. Arrange a certified translation if the document isn’t in Arabic or English.
  5. Keep the original flat and unlaminated, with a passport copy ready.
  6. After attestation, check the reference number on verify.mofa.gov.ae.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all documents need MOFA attestation?

No. Attestation is needed when an authority asks for it, usually because a document issued in one country is being used in another. A UAE salary certificate for a UAE bank won’t need it, while a foreign degree for a work permit usually will. Always ask the receiving office, since they decide what they accept.

Can MOFA attest a document issued in my home country inside the UAE?

For documents issued abroad, the official route is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the issuing country, then the UAE embassy or consulate there, applied for digitally at missions that offer it. There is no separate MOFA step in the UAE on that route. Check your country’s UAE mission page to see whether it offers the online service.

Does MOFA attest commercial invoices?

Not through the documents attestation service. MOFA’s own FAQ says commercial invoices and certificates of origin are processed through its eDAS commercial attestation system. Contracts, minutes of meetings, trademark registrations and company closure documents do go through the documents attestation service, according to the UAE government portal.

Does a translated document need attestation too?

MOFA accepts originals in Arabic or English, or originals accompanied by a legally certified translation. So if your document is in another language, the translation travels with it. Whether the translation itself needs separate attestation depends on the receiving authority, so confirm that before you start.

How do I know my MOFA attestation is genuine?

Digitally attested documents carry a reference number that you can check on MOFA’s verification site, verify.mofa.gov.ae. Do this as soon as you receive the result, so any problem is caught before you submit the document to an employer, school or court.
