Documents Required for Degree Certificate Attestation in the UAE

Wordcraft editorial teamReviewed by our legal documentation specialists

The documents required for degree certificate attestation for the UAE are your original degree certificate, a clear copy of it, a copy of your passport, and often your transcripts or mark sheets. If someone handles the steps for you, add a signed authorisation letter. Every office checks the original, so a copy alone won’t do.

Have a document to translate or attest?

Send a photo on WhatsApp and we’ll confirm the requirements and quote in writing before we start.

That’s the short list. Most delays don’t come from a missing document, though. They come from one that doesn’t match: a name spelled differently on the passport, a provisional certificate, transcripts left at home.

What does degree attestation for the UAE actually check?

Attestation doesn’t grade your degree or confirm that you studied. It confirms that the signatures and seals on the document are genuine. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes its attestation service in exactly those terms: it certifies the authenticity of signatures and seals on documents issued inside or outside the UAE.

For a degree issued abroad, that check happens as a chain. Each office confirms the signature of the office before it:

  1. An authority in the country where the degree was issued confirms the university’s signature. Depending on the country this might be the education department, a state authority or a notary.
  2. That country’s foreign ministry attests the document.
  3. The UAE embassy or consulate in that country completes the UAE attestation. Where the mission runs MOFA’s digital attestation service, one application covers both the embassy and the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), so there’s no separate MOFA step once the degree reaches the UAE.

Because every link relies on the one before it, fixing a problem after step two usually means going back to step one.

The core documents required for degree certificate attestation

Here’s the checklist we give people before they start. The exact list can change by country and by the office that receives it, so treat it as the baseline.

Document Why it’s needed What to check
Original degree certificate Each office checks the original. Copies can’t be attested in its place. Final degree, not a provisional certificate. Not laminated, torn or written on.
Photocopy of the degree Offices keep or check a copy against the original. Clear, full page, both sides if anything is printed on the back.
Passport copy Links the certificate to you. Name spelling matches the degree. Bring the original passport if you appear in person.
Transcripts or mark sheets Many employers and licensing bodies want them with the degree. Ask the receiving employer or authority first. Attesting them later means a second round.
UAE visa or Emirates ID copy Often asked for if you are already a UAE resident. Current, readable copy.
Authorisation letter Lets an agent submit and collect for you. Signed by you, naming who acts for you.

A company submitting for an employee may also need a request letter on its letterhead; the Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi, for example, asks firms for one signed by the authorised signatory.

Why the original matters so much

Will a certified or notarised copy do? For the degree itself, plan on the original. The home-country offices stamp the document, and the UAE embassy checks those stamps on the original before it issues the UAE attestation. So don’t laminate your degree (MOFA’s mission guidance says laminated documents cannot be attested), don’t staple it to other papers, and keep a colour scan before you hand it over.

Transcripts: attest them now or later?

Transcripts trip people up more than anything else. Some UAE employers only need the degree. Others, especially for licensed professions such as healthcare, engineering or teaching, also want the transcripts or mark sheets, and so do many universities.

Our advice: ask whoever requested the attestation, in writing, exactly which documents they need. If that includes transcripts, send them through the chain with the degree rather than starting a second run later. Keep multi-page transcripts as the university issued them. Our transcript attestation page explains how we handle them.

Common problems that stop a degree attestation

Name doesn’t match the passport

Your degree says one spelling, your passport another, or your surname changed after marriage. Small differences can be questioned at any step. If your name has changed, keep the supporting document ready (for example a marriage certificate), and ask the receiving office whether they need it attested too.

Provisional certificate instead of the final degree

A provisional or “pass” certificate is issued before the final degree. Many authorities won’t accept it in place of the degree for attestation, so check before you start the chain with it.

Distance or online learning

How distance-learning degrees are treated can depend on the university, the country and the purpose. Check with the receiving authority before you start.

Wrong details on the application

MOFA’s own service page warns that applications that aren’t completed correctly are rejected automatically, and that you are responsible for the accuracy of what you submit. Choose the issuing country, issuing authority and document type carefully.

How the steps differ by country

For degrees from India, the Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi says educational certificates are first authenticated by the concerned state government, then attested by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, and then by the UAE Embassy in New Delhi or the UAE Consulate in Mumbai. Elsewhere the first step may be a notary, a solicitor or a national education body.

The UAE side has changed too. Under MOFA’s digital attestation service, one application covers both the UAE embassy and MOFA. Instead of a sticker on the back of your degree, you receive the digitally attested document by email, with an attestation reference number and issue date that anyone can check on MOFA’s verification site. Your original is returned to you, and there’s no separate MOFA step in the UAE afterwards. MOFA says the service runs through selected UAE missions, so check the mission’s page for the country that issued your degree. A degree stamped on paper at an embassy before the switch may still be treated differently, so ask before you assume. Our UAE embassy attestation page covers that in more detail, and this older post explains how to verify a MOFA attestation once it’s done.

Attestation, equivalency and translation: which one do you need?

  • Attestation confirms the signatures and seals on your degree are genuine. Most employers and visa processes that ask for an attested degree mean this.
  • Equivalency is a separate recognition of a foreign degree, now officially called University Certificates Recognition. It’s usually needed for government jobs, some licensed professions and further study. It normally comes after attestation, not instead of it. See our guide to the equivalency certificate in the UAE.
  • Legal translation into Arabic may be asked for if the degree is in a language other than English or Arabic, or if the receiving authority wants an Arabic version. Our legal translation team handles that.

Not sure which one your employer means? Ask them to name exactly what they want to see.

A short before-you-start checklist

  1. Confirm in writing what the employer or authority needs: degree only, or degree plus transcripts.
  2. Check that the name on every document matches your passport, or gather proof of the change.
  3. Make sure you have the final degree, not a provisional certificate.
  4. Find out who will handle the home-country steps: you, a family member, or an agent with your authorisation letter.
  5. Check the UAE mission’s website in the issuing country for the current route.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I attest my degree without going back to my home country?

Usually yes. Someone with your authorisation, such as a family member or an attestation provider, can handle the home-country steps while you stay in the UAE. You’ll need to send the original degree, a passport copy and a signed authorisation letter. Some countries have extra rules, so check before posting anything.

Do I need the original degree, or is a copy enough?

Plan on sending the original. The home-country offices stamp the original certificate, and each office checks the one before it on that same document. A photocopy is normally needed as well, but only as a supporting copy, not as a replacement for the original.

Do transcripts need to be attested along with the degree?

It depends on who asked for the attestation. Many employers only need the degree, while licensing bodies, universities and equivalency applications often want transcripts too. Ask the receiving organisation in writing. If transcripts are needed, it’s easier to send them through the chain together with the degree than to attest them later.

What happens if my name is spelled differently on my degree and passport?

A mismatch can be questioned at any step. Keep a document that explains the difference, such as a marriage certificate or an official name change record, and ask the receiving office whether it also needs attesting. Sorting this out before the chain starts saves a return trip later.

Is degree attestation the same as an equivalency certificate?

No. Attestation confirms that the signatures and seals on your degree are genuine. Equivalency, now officially called University Certificates Recognition, is a separate recognition of a foreign degree. It’s often needed for government roles, some licensed professions and further study, and it usually needs the attested degree first.
