How to Extend a Tourist Visa in the UAE: Rules and Steps

Wordcraft editorial teamReviewed by our legal documentation specialists

To extend a tourist visa in the UAE, apply before the permit expires through the authority that issued it: GDRFA for Dubai visas, ICP for the other emirates. You submit the passport copy, a photo and the original visa details online or through an approved centre, pay the fee, and wait for the electronic notification. Each visa type has its own maximum total stay.

Your parents are visiting, the return flight is in four days, and your mother has just said she’d like to stay for another month. Or you’re here on a visit visa, job hunting, and the offer letter hasn’t arrived yet. Either way the question is the same: can the visa be extended, and how do you do it without ending up with a daily fine? Here is how it works, and where people trip.

Can You Extend a Tourist Visa in the UAE?

Usually yes, but not every entry permit is extendable. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) lists the extension rules on its Visa Extension service page. In short:

  • A visit or tourism permit can be extended once or more than once, as long as the total stay stays within 120 days.
  • A permit to visit a relative or friend, and a permit for exploring job opportunities or setting up a business, can be extended up to a total of 180 days.
  • Medical treatment and study or training permits have their own limits, also set by the authority.
  • Some permits cannot be extended at all, for example those for border areas, truck drivers, and workers on tourist ships and pleasure boats. Certain short visas issued to nationals of specific countries living outside their home country follow stricter rules, so read the terms for your exact permit.

The numbers above are what the authority publishes today. Rules for particular nationalities and visa categories do change, so treat your own visa copy as the final word and check the current terms before you promise anyone a date.

Which Authority Do You Apply To: GDRFA or ICP?

This is where most confusion starts. The rule of thumb is simple: apply to the authority that issued the visa.

  • Visa issued in Dubai: the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, GDRFA Dubai. Its catalogue lists “extending a tourist visa for a single or multiple trips” under entry permits.
  • Visa issued by any other emirate: ICP, through its smart app or smart services website. Login is with UAE Pass.

If you’re unsure, look at the top of the visa copy. The issuing authority and the file number are printed there. We’ve written a longer comparison in ICP vs GDRFA: which one handles your visa, which helps if you’ve moved between emirates.

What Do You Need Before You Apply?

ICP states the basics: the passport, a personal photo, and the same documents that were submitted when the visa was issued, according to the visa type. In practice, have these ready before you open the app:

  1. A clear colour copy of the passport page with the photo. The passport should have enough validity left, so check the date first.
  2. A copy of the current visit visa or entry permit.
  3. A recent passport-style photo with a plain background.
  4. The sponsor’s details if a hotel, agency or a resident relative issued the visa.
  5. A UAE Pass account if you’re applying yourself through ICP.

Photos and scans are the usual reason an application bounces. A blurred passport copy or a cropped photo costs you a day, and a day matters when the visa is about to lapse.

How Does the Extension Process Work, Step by Step?

The ICP service lists a short digital flow, and the Dubai flow follows the same logic, though the screens differ:

  1. Log in on the app or website and choose the visa extension service.
  2. Review the form. Details are often pulled from the original visa, so correct anything that looks wrong.
  3. Attach documents only if the system can’t fetch them itself.
  4. Pay the government fee. It depends on the visa type and the length you ask for, so read the amount on screen before you confirm.
  5. Wait for the electronic notification confirming the new expiry date.

ICP gives a completion time of about two days for the service, but that is the authority’s target, not a promise for your file. If your visa expires this week, don’t leave it to the last evening.

What Happens If the Visa Expires Before You Extend?

Once a visit visa has lapsed, you’re no longer extending; you’re staying beyond your permitted period, and a fine accrues for each day. ICP lists a per-day fine for expiry of the permitted stay in its extension service, and fine rules have been adjusted over time, so we won’t quote a figure here. Check the fine on the authority’s own page, or on our overstay fine settlement page if you need help dealing with it.

The advice is boring but it works: file the extension while the visa is still valid, and screenshot the confirmation.

Extension, Exit and Re-Entry, or Status Change: Which Is Right?

People often pick the wrong tool. A short comparison:

Your situation Usually the better route
You need a few more weeks and are within the stay limit Extend the visit visa
You’ve reached the maximum total stay Leave the country and apply for a new visa; don’t assume one that lets you straight back in
You got a job and want to stay Employment visa, often with a visa status change inside the country
A relative here can sponsor you A family residence visa; see how to sponsor family

If you have a job offer in hand, extending a visit visa again and again is rarely the neatest option. Ask whether a status change makes more sense, since it avoids the leave-and-return trip.

Common Reasons an Extension Gets Rejected or Delayed

  • Applying after expiry. The most common one, and nothing fixes it except the fine process.
  • Applying to the wrong authority. A Dubai visa filed through ICP, or the reverse.
  • Passport details that don’t match the visa, for example a renewed passport with a new number.
  • Going past the maximum stay for that permit type.
  • Unpaid fines or blocks on the sponsor’s or visitor’s file.
  • A permit type that can’t be extended, which you’d only know by reading the terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I extend a tourist visa from inside the UAE?

Yes, for eligible permits. Visit visas can be extended while you are in the country, through the issuing authority’s app or website or an approved service centre. Do it before the expiry date, and keep the confirmation notice with your passport copy.

How many times can a tourist visa be extended?

ICP says a visit or tourism permit can be extended once or several times, provided the total stay does not exceed 120 days. Relative or friend visits and job exploration permits have a higher limit of 180 days. Always confirm against the terms for your own visa category.

How long does a visit visa extension take?

ICP lists the service as taking about two days. Delays happen when a photo or passport copy is rejected. If your travel date is close, apply early and don’t wait for the last day.

Can someone else apply for the extension on my behalf?

Often yes. A sponsor, hotel, agency or typing centre can file it with your documents. The login for the authority’s app is personal, so check who is actually named as the applicant on the screen before anything is paid.

What if I can’t extend any further?

Then your options are to leave before the permit ends and apply again, or to move to a residence visa such as employment or family sponsorship. A short visa consultation will tell you which is possible for your nationality and situation.
