How Long Is a Power of Attorney Valid in the UAE?

When a UAE power of attorney expires, when it ends by itself, and when a bank or registry may want a newer one even though the old one is still in force.

Power of attorney validity in the UAE depends on where the POA was notarized and on what it says. A POA notarized through the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) is valid for three years. A POA notarized through Dubai Courts or the federal Ministry of Justice (MOJ) has no expiry unless the document states one. Any POA can still end early.

This guide covers each rule, the checks banks and registries apply in practice, and when to replace a POA that is technically still valid. Wordcraft drafts and translates new POAs and revocations and books the notary for them; if a POA is being contested, speak to a lawyer.

Does a UAE Power of Attorney Expire?

Where notarizedValidity
Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD)Three years
Dubai Courts notary or licensed private notary in DubaiNo expiry unless the document states one
Ministry of Justice (federal notary, including the MOJ e-Notary)No expiry unless the document states one
Any POA with a stated end dateEnds on that date
POA issued abroadAs stated in the POA and under the law where it was issued; confirmed case by case

A POA with no expiry is convenient, but it also stays usable until you cancel it. That is why many principals put an end date on sensitive powers such as selling property or receiving money, and we can help you decide whether yours needs one. For the main kinds of POA, see types of power of attorney in the UAE.

Why a Bank or Registry May Still Ask for a Newer POA

A POA with no legal expiry is not automatically accepted for every transaction. The authority relying on it makes that call. In practice:

  • Some authorities, banks and property trustee offices ask for a recently issued POA, or for confirmation that it has not been revoked, especially for high-value transactions.
  • The Dubai Land Department applies its own current requirements to property POAs, including specific wording that identifies the property. See property power of attorney in Dubai.
  • Banks may require their own form, or fresh confirmation from the account holder.
  • Many notary platforms let the receiving party verify a POA's status electronically.

Before your transaction, we check how the authority you are dealing with currently treats older POAs, so you are not turned away at the counter.

When a POA Ends Automatically

  • The task is completed: a POA to sell one car ends when the car is sold.
  • The stated period ends: or three years pass for an ADJD POA.
  • Death of the principal or the agent.
  • Loss of legal capacity of the principal or the agent.
  • Revocation by the principal, subject to the rules for POAs given in favor of the agent or a third party. See cancel a power of attorney.
  • The agent resigns and the principal is notified.
  • A company principal is dissolved or liquidated, for company POAs.

Renew or Replace Your POA

A POA cannot usually be extended in place. If it has expired, is about to, or an authority wants a fresh one, you sign a new POA and, where the old one is still valid, cancel it so that two versions are not in circulation. It is time to replace your POA when:

  1. It was notarized through ADJD and is close to three years old.
  2. Your passport, Emirates ID or name has changed since you signed it.
  3. You need powers the old POA leaves out, such as receiving money or delegating.
  4. A bank, trustee office or authority has asked for a recent POA.
  5. You want a different agent, or no longer trust the current one.

We draft the new POA and the revocation together in Arabic and English, so one notary appointment covers both, whether you attend in person, join by video or sign from abroad. See power of attorney services.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a power of attorney valid in the UAE?

Three years if it was notarized through the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department. A POA notarized through Dubai Courts or the Ministry of Justice has no expiry unless the document itself sets one.

Does a Dubai POA expire?

Not automatically. A Dubai Courts POA with no stated end date stays in force, but it still ends on death, revocation or completion of the task, and some authorities may ask for a recent one.

Can I add an expiry date to my POA?

Yes. State an end date or a period and the POA ends then. This is common for property sales and banking powers.

Is a POA still valid after the principal dies?

No. A POA generally ends on the death of the principal or the agent, and the estate then goes through the inheritance process.

How do I renew an expired POA?

You sign a new one before a notary. We draft it, plus a revocation of the old POA where needed, and book the appointment.
